30 years old. Life savings gone. Since April of 2020, I’ve finally amassed a 6 figure loss. Looks like I’ll be eating ramen until retirement. 📉📉 Loss

I truly don’t understand what I am looking at. I don’t get options at all. But, I guess that means you and I have something in common.

3k

u/Warlover1 13d ago

Options are easy. You buy imaginary contracts then see how fast you lose your money

775

u/zxc123zxc123 13d ago edited 13d ago

Even if you lose it's only digital money. Just turn off the screen!

On the bright side, you can now work at McDonalds with the new +$15/hr rate for IRL hard cash. Next time buy SPY LEAPS or (disregard this. you'll probably F it upagain) just set auto-DCA into VOO until you have $10,000.

u/roptions 13d ago

Just turn off the screen!

lol that’s not how it works. You have to uninstall the app.

81

It's like you're playing roulette and bet that a certain number will hit. And then it does not, and the house cleans out your account.

131

u/essjay2009 12d ago

That’s remarkably accurate because just as the ball bounces around the various numbers on the wheel and you, for a fraction of a second, see that you’re in the money only for it to all disappear immediately after, just like options.

Oh, and there’s the chance that IV causes the wheel to spin so fast it levitates off the table and flies out of the window, hitting a passing car and leaving you in severe debt because you have to pay for the driver’s injuries.

60

u/Lo-siento-juan 12d ago

A lot of the bets I see on here it never went near their lucky number because they picked one that wasn't even in the wheel.

28

u/essjay2009 12d ago

You have the option, but not the obligation, to buy or sell shares at a certain price by a certain date.

269

u/Mr_Prolapsed_Anus 12d ago

You can commit that sentence to memory and still have no clue how to trade options.

55

u/Still_No_Tomatoes 12d ago

It's true. I can tell you what options are but don't have a clue how to trade options.

33

u/mis-Hap 12d ago

Buy low, sell high. Or, optionally, sell high, buy low (or let expire)

And to answer the other question of how they lost all the $, when they bought a call (option to buy shares at set price in future, regardless of what the future exchange price is), it would only be only useful if the future share price goes above the set price in the call. In that case, the difference between the two prices is how you would make $. If there is no flipping opportunity by the expiration date, then all the $ spent on the call is lost. Compare that to a bad day of holding big company stocks, where after a bad day you still have 80%+ of your investment value left; options are risky!

Only works until you get assigned. Neither path is guaranteed

44

u/TexasInvestor86 13d ago edited 12d ago

When I do long dated covered calls and they’re a year out and I’m saving significant $ on long term capital gains from the equities being assigned - I’m okay with that. Not to mention that I usually write options at 40-50% over the underlying prices. If my options get assigned and it’s been over a year and I’m capturing 40-50% plus premium and paying less in taxes, then it’s a win.

Every dollar I make in the market over my salary is taxed at 24%. It’s not worth it for me to over trade.

14

u/idacyphor 12d ago

Long dated calls don’t burn theta near as fast. I bet if you sold closer to the money and closer in time (7 to 45 days out) the increased gains would more than pay that tax delta on those shares that do get called away earlier than you like triggering short term cap gains. That is why weeklies are so risky and sellers win the majority of the time, they burn extrinsic value much faster than long dated options.

6

u/TexasInvestor86 12d ago

I agree 100%, but I have a good career and just can’t deploy enough time to really research. You’re spot on though that selling weeklies are superior to selling leaps. My strategies are slow with a little risk, but my taxes are very simple.

Can you tell me your Strategy please ? I would love to never do this and always trade the opposite

3k

u/Caribou_Lit 13d ago edited 12d ago
  1. Be lonely. Browse Reddit.
  2. Stumble upon edgy Reddit community full of people seeming to have fun. Lots of overdone and unfunny emoji jokes I can relate to because I don’t know what actual culture or friends are.
  3. See the most popular threads are using these things called “options”. Nickname FDs. Something else I can relate to.
  4. Be surprised at how easy TD ameritrade let me buy them. All I had to do was click “yes” on a few forms I didn’t read.
  5. Be happy I am now part of the community.
  6. Start buying a few $hundred worth of options. Can’t lose much so whatever.
  7. Actually experience adrenaline for the first time since I unsuccessfully talked to that girl in 9th grade.
  8. Discover gambling addiction.
  9. Be in denial about gambling addiction.

10 Post losses. Get attention from other internet virgins.

11 Repeated steps 7-10.

12 Mistake internet upvotes for positive attention instead of actual pity that I blew $100k without ever having a chance to make money because I didn’t bother to actually learn anything.

13 (yet to come): realize how many hookers you can actually buy for $100k. Realize that as pathetic as it is, it would have been an actual human interaction and better than what I blew $100k on.

Seriously though dude. Every trade is a loss?! You never sold for a profit once? I can’t believe that is even possible. Stop before you end up homeless.

Edit: yeah I get it. Sorted by loss. So OP has a loser fetish.

I get the sense that your the type that would jump in on emotion (gambling weeklies or something) and as soon as the option turned negative instead of cutting of your losses and preserving your capital for another day, you let it drop to zero in a perverse self-abusive way because if you couldn’t win, you deserved to loose it all. I don’t mean to be mean, I know this, because a decade or two ago, you were me. If this is the case, seek therapy, deal with what you gotta deal, paper trade until you have written out viable trading strategies that take the emotion out of the game. Moments like these suck, but what tou chose next will define you and hopefully for the better. Sometimes when we hit bottom, we can look around see the error of our ways, and build ourselves back better with a more solid foundation. Life is a marathon, not a sprint.. in the end we all get to the finish line together.

At 30 years old I was $30,000 in student loan and credit card debt (~$50k in today's money adjusting for inflation). All for a college degree that qualified me for hot brown beverage service, sanitary engineering in an educational setting, manual soil linear void creation or similar careers.

It took 20 years, frugality, hard work, investment in things that weren't the equivalent of a roulette wheel and occasional setbacks.

But now Top Ramen is now only nostalgic treat. (Awesome with finely chopped and sautéed onions, garlic, and veggies in peanut oil before adding water and ramen. A little Chile powder plus a chopped boiled egg helps.)

Maybe consider giving up speculating but don't give up on becoming wealthy. Things change. Sometimes for the worse but also for the better.

100% man - I have a few hundred thousand in my retirement that is deployed only to the S&P 500. Compound interest is such a powerful tool that you don’t need to over trade. I think this guy was chasing losses. He needs some serious intervention

u/Sheeple81 13d ago

Especially since op started when it was low - best time to buy in and he went another direction deep into the red, lol.

I mean, this guy could have bought something boring like fucking railroad stocks in April 2020 and he would have doubled his money by now.

You haven't made a single profitable options trade since April and it never occurred to you that maybe you're not cut out for this? At the very least fucking paper trade your strategy before you jump back in. This is the kind of gambling mentality on this sub that is depressing to watch.

23

u/Brawldud 13d ago

He defo has profitable trades. He has his positions sorted by P&L ascending, and then only showing you the part of the page with the losers.

Options gambling usually has negative expected return, but making this many options trades, with a mix of calls and puts, on this many tickers and losing on 100% of them is extremely improbable.

I don’t understand options or care to. I’m slow and steady. Anxiety would kill me if I was in high risk gambles like these. But good luck 👍

Bro, you’re 30, I got a 3 step plan to get you back on track for retirement: 1. Delete Reddit 2. Buy index funds instead of options 3. The end
