This is better than the stupid Airtrain but forking the line instead of just extending it from the current terminus is also pretty stupid.

Beggars can't be choosers and we can't let perfect be the enemy of good. How much ridership do those two stations generate vs how much ridership would the LGA extension generate? I'd be willing to wager a lot that even if the extension was one, single station at LGA, that it would generate far more ridership that would be lost by halving service at Astoria Blvd and Ditmars blvd. But this would open up a lot of development along the GCP to the subway that's currently nowhere near a subway line. There's also the future to think about. Imagine if this subway line were extended past LGA to Mets-Willets point? Then imagine if phase 3 extended it to Jamaica? Manhattan to LGA should be first and the priority, but just starting there opens up a lot of opportunities.

Under this proposal all of that the ridership from LGA and points eastward is locked into only being served by half the capacity of the line since they need to keep running trains to the existing two stations.

Actually, that would be less than half of the existing Broadway Local capacity, since the 60th Street connection siphons off some more trains to the QBL too,

Unless such an LGA subway extension also builds an in-system transfer between Queens Plaza and Queensboro Plaza to make up for it. It's also not unrealistic for a replacement station to be built near Astoria Blvd, making the decision on whether just Ditmars should be closed or reduced to a shuttle/every 15 minutes or something.
