Kyrie Irving on Instagram live: "I’m standing with all those that believe what is right. Everybody is entitled to do what they feel is what’s best for themselves. Seeing the way this is dividing our world up...it’s sad to see...People are losing jobs to mandates."

Source

It still baffles me how he is more concerned with people losing jobs over people losing lives. What's worse is that his fanboys talking about how " nobody losing lives from kyrie not taking vaccine"
Just embarassing...

Well at the beginning of the live he did say something along the lines, “finding it crazy/ridiculous that people are saying he wouldn’t ever get vaccinated “ so uh idk. Also said he found it crazy that people were saying he would retire over this.

331

u/Ode1st [MIA] Alonzo Mourning 12d ago

My guess is he’s seeing all the backlash/the team not coddling him, and it’s more than/different from what he’s used to, so now he has to slowly plant the seed that he was always going to get vaccinated and he technically never said he wouldn’t and all that bs.

He’s going to do the Tim Robinson slowly going bald sketch but for getting the vaccine. Someone needs to hire a gorilla to run into the practice facility and vaccinate him. Suns have a gorilla, this could work.

Again, he was asked directly and repeatedly by reporters for the reasons behind his decisions.

He declined to reply or said its personal and private.

If he was a mouthpiece for this position, that's the time to say so. Saying it now is just desperate PR to try and change the narrative.

I kind of think Kyrie can be convinced of anything if he finds the right stream of people and internet info.

Initially, his stance was probably like most, skeptical and scared. Then he went to his conspiracy-internet-k-hole and jumped on the “anti-black Tuskegee 2.0 tracker” stuff but obviously his camp kept that mostly under wraps.

Then, his PR and management needed to pivot him back to his social causes life guru third eye bullshit and steered it as “let’s be anti-mandate”. A few nudges, shared videos and groupchats later our guy is releasing this right about the time he needs to put up or shut up taking the shot.

This is all armchair bullshit but it wouldn’t surprise me a bit if the guys actual mental health is hanging on by a thread. A few bad turns where things don’t go his way and he’ll have a very public meltdown.

People typically don’t oscillate between conspiracy theorist and organizing against actual real government positions. This isn’t a game either. Taking this current stance directly opposes the US Government and many other democratic countries. I doubt this goes well for him from this point on. I also no longer think this is a stance he will change.

If I’m the Nets, I’d basically give him a week and then trade him for picks and a TPE and see if you can nab a veteran PG.

512

u/Perennial19931993 Jazz 12d ago

I think he’s just the kind of person that thinks he is smarter than anyone else, and if the prevailing wisdom goes one way it must be wrong because everyone else is an idiot and only he is smart.

But he’s too dumb to realise when that razor doesn’t hold i.e. whenever science is involved

151

u/rebeltrillionaire Lakers 12d ago

The prevailing comment that I hope finds him is 4.8 million people died so far and that is sad. People missing a couple months of work is honestly whatever. Capitalism can be tragic, but this ain’t why.

tldr; Kyrie embodies much of what was wrong about Tuskegee and he doesn't even know it.

Tuskegee started in 1932, before penicillin had been confirmed to be effective for syphilis. The researchers still gave the men mild health care (treatment for anemia and fatigue), free meals, etc., but no treatment for syphilis, though they claimed to be trying to help. But by the mid 1940s, when it was proven to be effective, the researchers still claimed to be treating syphilis but did not provide them with penicillin. An effective treatment for a life threatening illness became available, and those in the bully pulpit didn't promote it to the black community.

This differs in a few ways from what Kyrie is doing, but there are striking similarities. Fuck everything about that guy.

53

u/Galderrules [PHI] Dikembe Mutombo 12d ago

I feel the need to say that if the Sixers trade for him I won’t pay any money to the organization until he’s gone. Sorry, this isn’t controversial, he’s a psychopath and a moron if this is his stance and he’s unvaccinated.

People are talking about how Bron gets flack if he speaks up and people don’t agree with him while Brady doesn’t get criticized for being silent— that’s the point. Unless otherwise qualified celebrities have no authority to speak on most social and basically all scientific issues, but they have the largest audience. If you’re stupid, stay quiet. If you want to be an advocate, listen, learn, confirm, and then speak. And when you’re criticized, it’s 100% okay to either change or demonstrate why you think that way, using more than YouTube and discredited academics.

Y’all save me, my future MIL is antivax, but at least she isn’t famous.

u/Most_Objective Raptors 12d ago

Ali had commercial back in the day telling people to get vaccinated.

416

u/Perennial19931993 Jazz 12d ago edited 12d ago

This comparison is so dumb because it essentially reduces what Ali did only to the fact that his stances were controversial.

Anyone can take a controversial stance, regardless of whether that stance is mind-numbingly stupid (antivax, flat earth). Ali is respected because he took controversial stances that were progressive and have been vindicated by history - pacifism and about civil rights.

131

u/Schveen15 Suns Bandwagon 12d ago

Also, it’s worth noting that the conscription Ali was boycotting was, in my opinion, selectively enforced: Sonny Liston and Floyd Patterson (boxers Ali fought in that time period. So similar age group and similar health status) were not conscripted. Neither were baseball players Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson. Likewise for Wilt Chamberlain, John Havlicek, Bill Russell, K.C. Jones, Jerry West, and many, many others.

To anyone saying “Elgin Baylor was Active Duty”, Elgin Baylor was literally in the Army Reserve prior to being activated

I’m confident that the USA government activated Ali for service as a way to silence him, while strangely not activating any other prominent athlete who wasn’t already in the Reserves

These vaccine mandates are being enforced equitably for the city, county, and state governments choosing to enact them on their employees. Likewise for federal employees and private companies.

It would only be even remotely similar to Ali IMO if the mandate was being enforced selectively and he was being targeted while other prominent athletes were not, which clearly isn’t the case

He is more concerned with the lost jobs than the lost lives and this is confusing to people on here.

It’s less confusing once you realize that Irving probably doesn’t believe that the pandemic is as bad as they say it is. Or we are being manipulated in some way. Or, even worse, that it isn’t real at all, and let’s not act like he is above that kind of thinking.

Such a dumb argument from him and his camp. There are tons of things you can’t do in the workplace and keep your job. Rules get put in place to protect the health and well-being of your co-workers. People who choose not to follow those rules don’t get to work. There’s nothing new or wrong about that.
