Weekly Off Topic Thread - Week of November 15, 2021 Anything Goes

This is the Weekly Off-Topic thread

There's more to this hobby than just credit cards - it spreads out into travel aspirations, what luggage or wallet you're using, or what flavor kombucha your local WeWork is serving. Please use this thread to talk about all things even tangentially related to churning. Memes, jokes, and off-topic content are allowed (and encouraged) here. Please use our regular threads to ask basic questions, ask questions about what card to get, or talk about MS. But if it's off-topic elsewhere, you're on-topic here.

Regular rules still apply.

Have fun!

Note: Posting and soliciting referrals are still not allowed.

RFID-blocking wallet or not? Does anyone really have a contactless card skimmer?

Had a nice win at Bed Bath and Beyond today. Wanted to buy a new vacuum cleaner and Bed Bath was matched to the cheapest price. Online it says it's excluded from coupons. In store I got the coupon applied. So 20% off an expensive vacuum. Woohoo

Amex Kabbage debit card is apparently a mastercard :)

P2 invited me to join Marriott rewards, which I did. Got an email confirmation and a membership number.

How do I log in though? It can't find me with my membership number/email/name combination. Did Marriott just create a membership for me without an online account?!

Was wondering if anyone else had any negative experiences with BuyForMeRetail, heard from a few churning friends that when they had the airpods deal, boxes with 2 sets of airpods were shipped to BFMR, but 3 friends reported that BFMR claimed they only received one set of airpod. Another friend shipped the wrong item to BFMR, and they returned it to Amazon for him. Problem was, the item they returned was not the item my friend ordered...

2

u/planesurf MIA, HNL Nov 21 '21

3 ordered, 2 payed out, 1 missing.

Selected "item not delivered" and got a refund to my Amazon balance.

Not happy to see other DPs like this...

Lol does anyone know if American Express has any tickets available(currently) for the Adele shows in London for July 2022? It says the show is "presented by American Express" so I didn't know if they had any tickets available(I would personally check but I don't have an AMEX card atm lol)

1

u/jfchops2 MSP Nov 19 '21

That just means they're sponsoring it, it's nothing special. Could say "presented by Papa John's" and the show would be the same.

If you had a Plat you could try calling concierge and asking.

Did this with P10 recently.

Month 0 - Discover It

Month 6 - Amex Delta Gold Biz

Month 9 - Amex Gold Biz

Month 12 - CSP

Month 15 - CIC

Month 17 - CIP

Month 19 - CIU

Month 22 - Amex Marriott Biz

u/12itsnotme12 Nov 20 '21

Try discover it. Leave it open for a few months to a year, then go for a no annual fee chase card (CFU or CFF), then chill.

Keep utilization low too.

And the standard "pay in full" If they don't wanna get into the game that's a solid base for them to hop from

Edit: if the goal is only to boost their credit and not get them into the game, consider adding as an AU to a card that backdates

5

u/URtheoneforme Nov 19 '21

If you're just starting, the name of the game is to establish credit, not necessarily raise a score. I agree with /u/jfchops2 about getting one card, sitting on it for a year, and then opening a second one. Waiting a year sucks. But it will set you up for sustainable success down the road when you don't get shutdown for bust out.

Research how the FICO scoring models work that mortgage lenders use, if that's your goal. There many models out and mortgage lenders tend to use specific models, I think something like 2, 3 and 4 or 2, 4, and 5? Each model weights credit factors differently so that your FICO 2 score will be different than your FICO 9 score (which is one of the current models that credit services and banks provide).

I just refi'ed my mortgage and my FICO 9 is 850 but my best score from the refi was 800 - and lenders use the middle score of all 3 bureaus so that one wasn't even used. So what works for getting credit cards won't necessarily have the same effect for other loans.

However, across the board age of accounts matter so opening something they can keep long term sooner rather than later is a good first step. Probably also want to look into option to have rent and utilities reported to the credit bureau to establish payment history - assuming it's good payment history.

1

u/jfchops2 MSP Nov 19 '21

Open a secured card, use it responsibly for one year, then open a Chase Sapphire Preferred for your second card. You don't need to charge something to a card every month to count as on time, a $0 payment on a $0 balance still counts.

Since you're on r/churning I assume you're looking to get into churning. Do not make the mistake I did by opening up several shitty cards in your first year trying to boost your score faster / earn some middling rewards. Waiting the full year to get card #2 pays off substantially better because of the opportunity cost of not having 3 more open 5/24 slots.

It's kind of weird/funny how people value Hilton FNCs at like $800

You could literally buy one on churning marketplace for half the price (last time I checked a few weeks ago).

Like bruh if I bought a J ticket for $1,000, does that mean I can "value" it at $5,000 because that's one someone paid after me?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '21

[deleted]

1

u/planesurf MIA, HNL Nov 19 '21

Yes. Like people booking NH F and saying they got $30K in value.

I'm kind of skeptical of that $30K in "value" when you've never bought full fare F before...

1

u/jfchops2 MSP Nov 19 '21

But the points dude said I could get 20cpp if I signed up for the credit card he recommends

3

u/TheSultan1 EWR, FTW Nov 19 '21

Comes with the risk of adverse action. And many don't want to give out personal details (which I believe you need to book for someone else).

1

u/planesurf MIA, HNL Nov 19 '21

It’s more about the valuation $ than the technicals.

3

u/TheSultan1 EWR, FTW Nov 19 '21

Privacy is part of "technicals" now?

Man, I feel old.

2

u/planesurf MIA, HNL Nov 19 '21

If someone valued privacy, they wouldn't be claiming on social media in various groups about their value and their stay LOL

1

u/TheSultan1 EWR, FTW Nov 19 '21

I was speaking more from my perspective. A FNC is worth $800 if I would've paid $800 for the night and I can't/don't want to cover it with points, because I ain't buying FNCs.

It's worth $800 to whomever posted it because even if they would buy the FNC (or if they'd buy the points for less or whatever), they don't know they can. Also, there's a difference between posting about the redemption on social media and giving some rando your info to book the FNC for you (or whatever it is you have to do).

I signed up for the free Panera+ for 6 months through the Amex thing because I actually have a Panera really convenient to me. Been three times this week, man is their coffee terrible. At at least my location is.

All Panera is doing so far is proving that I brew better coffee.

Has any purchased a wifi mesh system from Dell? Which do you recommend? I'm thinking this is the best use for my $200 biz plat credits this year.

2

u/Andk56 Nov 19 '21

I recently bought a router (not a mesh system), and since Dell’s selection is pretty small I just looked up reviews on the 3 to pick from. PCMag seemed like a good source of info, so I went with the one they recommended. You can also look up reviews and price match with Amazon.

Booked a short trip to Bogota using some DL GCs I had lying around after seeing SCF’s email about $200 flights to BOG.

No idea what we’re doing yet but it’s about $100 each for me and P2 including what I paid for the DL GCs, which is less than I just paid for Glass Animals tickets in my own city. So overall I’m pretty happy about it.

If anyone is waiting to use their Saks credit (and waiting for another good CB portal rate), I'd highly recommend the Ralph Lauren Mini Terry Logo Bath Robe at $75. I'm fortunate enough to be WFH, so robes are my workwear in the colder months. This one is on the thinner side, but feels like a dream.

I recently applied for a Citi Premier card for the 80,000 (or 60,000, I don't remember the exact number) points/miles, and I SEVERELY underestimated how ridiculously long it would actually take to get approved and actually get the card (for more details, see my other post on this).

So I've somewhat relegated myself to acceptance of this ridiculous, absurd "processing" period, and I'm now trying to figure out how to go ahead and make my black Friday purchases on my other card(s), and just charge as much as possible to the Citi card (assuming I'm approved) to be able to get the bonus by spending ______ in __ months.

So my question is, for those of you that do and/or have done it, how do you maximize charges to new credit cards to get the bonus if you don't actually NEED $4,000 (or whatever the minimum spend is) without charging something you wouldn't already buy anyway? I've considered overpaying on as many bills as I can that I can use a card for without extra fees, I've thought about stocking up on as much food as I can fit in my freezer, hell I'd even buy a shit ton of gas (considering the current absurd gas prices in the US) to use later if I had a way to store it in bulk lol.

Any suggestions for spending as much as possible to a card to meet the threshold without spending on things you don't normally buy anyway?

0

u/dowork821 Nov 17 '21

I signed up for the premier while I was working on several other msr’s so I just used plastiq to pay my mortgage since it’s a MasterCard. The bonus more then offsets the fee.

0

u/someonesdatabase Nov 17 '21

Use the card to pay all health bills that you'd be reimbursed for through an FSA/HSA. Make extra payments on your car insurance or any other insurance. Prepay your phone carrier bill.

0

u/User_492006 Nov 17 '21

I have healthcare through the military, but I definitely plan to do both those things (God knows car insurance will EASILY eat up all that money as insane as that is these days).

manufactured spending

-5

u/User_492006 Nov 17 '21 edited Nov 17 '21

What is that?

Edit: Nevermind I googled it, but have you ever run into any pushback from card issuers for doing this? I mean my first thought was to buy a half dozen or so $100 Walmart gift cards (holiday season maybe Citi would assume they're gifts?) but I'm just curious what I can get away with without Citi flagging the "suspicious transactions".

0

u/OccamsVirus MSY, EWR Nov 17 '21

Citi won't care about a a dozen Walmart gift cards. Generally speaking what you purchase is none of the bank's business. Obviously there are exemptions and some banks are more sensitive to certain vendors but overall you'll be fine

4

u/bta15 Nov 16 '21

I’m considering spending the $250k on a delta card in 2022 to hit the diamond medallion waiver. I’ll have like 90k MQM rolling over so hitting the MQM level wont be difficult. Obviously $250k is a lot of money, on a 2% cash back card that’s $5k it’ll cost me. The spend on a reserve card would generate 300k skymiles which I’d value at $3600, so net we are looking at $1400 to be diamond.

I will be platinum medallion through 2023 anyway, is $1400 worth the bump from plat to diamond? I guess it really depends on how much I value upgrades, over the course of 1.5 years, maybe I make up $1400 in upgrades by being diamond vs platinum? I suppose one overseas delta one upgrade would basically make it worth it.

As I type this out, the more I think its a no.

1

u/JPWRana Nov 17 '21

Is the spend organic or MS? I ask because i was also going to ask if you factored in your time spent MS'ing.

3

u/bta15 Nov 17 '21

Pretty organic

1

u/Aapudding Nov 17 '21

Then you should also consider opportunity cost

1

u/bta15 Nov 17 '21

That was what I was trying to do comparing it to the 2% cb, is that not the correct approach?

2

u/Aapudding Nov 17 '21

No, it’s a lot of money so it’s not like you can get subs for every dollar but a few subs increase the alternative payout or at a minimum consider boa premium rewards for 2.625% back

1

u/bta15 Nov 17 '21

Subs aren’t an issue, peeling off to spend $3-5k is easy. I do need to look into Merrill edge and see what the fees look like, that could be a viable option

1

u/isaacides JOK, STR Nov 18 '21

FYI Merrill Edge brought back their bonus (I think). They also have a close out fee of $50 or $75 (I forget how much exactly) for a 100% transfer out.

1

u/JPWRana Nov 18 '21

For chase it's $75.

2

u/liquor_in_the_front CIP, PPK Nov 17 '21

Absolutely not. Especially with the devaluation of Diamond with how GUCs are now.

1

u/bta15 Nov 17 '21

This does concern me. I was leaning yes b4 that announcement

4

u/De11kbn Nov 17 '21

I think you are under valuing 500k points maybe even more depending on what you spend on or how you do it. Given that you fly a lot (assuming since you want Diamond) - a bunch of free business class or aspirational international itenaries - would be missed.

1

u/bta15 Nov 17 '21

It’s 300k, but that doesn’t factor the sub of the reserve. Most points would be used domestically.

Tried out the new Priority Pass restaurant in DEN. Decent pub grub type food, crowd pleasing microbrews, and quite quick service.

It was bigger than I realized: 35 total tables and 15 bar seats. But almost all the tables are two-tops, so could be a challenge with larger groups. Less than half full for my mid morning visit. Way the heck at the end of the new B terminal annex, quite a hike from the central core.

Terms are written a bit odd, but PP holder + 1 guest does equal $56 credit as you'd expect. They have no problem running your card for tip only.

Surprised not to run into planesurf.

Thanks for mentioning this last week and your DP. Just about to head there now (enough time between Southwest flights to mosey on down to B). Do they take both the app and physical card? I have nightmares I brought the Amex based one rather than a Chase one.

3

u/lenin1991 HOT, DOG Nov 16 '21

I used the physical card, but the listing says they accept digital, and they seem very familiar with the whole system.

6

u/ilovetoyap OLD, DRT Nov 17 '21

Adding my off topic DP. It does take a while (10-15 minutes) to walk here from center of B. So up to 30 minutes if you are connecting on Southwest or something in C (compared to the Centurion lounge already in C most of us have access to). Food is definitely more hearty than Centurion and after ordering it is fast. They were backed up with only one server so took me about ten minutes to order.

Food was decent and either electronic or physical PP is accepted. My total was $55 and change while I was due $56 so that was a quite satisfying spend and then I tipped cash but they would take credit tips.

I have a 4.5 hour layover in MUC on my way to MAD (around 10:00-14:30) on December 23rd. P2 really wants to head into Munich to visit the Christmas market at the Marienplatz during that time.

Time-wise, we’ll need an hour to get back and forth and then perhaps another hour-ish to get through security coming back in. I haven’t flown anywhere since the pandemic started, so I have no idea what to expect with timing of customs or entry stuff arriving from the US. That seems to be the biggest wildcard at the moment. Ideally, we’d probably want at least 90 minutes there to enjoy it.

Does that sound doable? My thought is that we can give it a shot, but will abort if there are any delays in the flight or customs.

EDIT- After I asked this, I found out the Christmas market in Munich is canceled this year. :(

4

u/planesurf MIA, HNL Nov 17 '21

Not enough time

The airport and metro is efficient but one way to the city is at least 30 minutes

3

u/sfryder08 Nov 16 '21

That's going to be tight. At least in the before times, The S2/S8 would run every 20 minutes. The S2 (or S1 now, they keep changing the lines) takes about an hour to get from Marienplatz to the Airport and then an hour back. It's doable, but you'll be in a rush, and if you happen to miss the S-Bahn it sounds like a lot of stress.

2

u/kit_kat_jam KIT, KAT Nov 16 '21

I was thinking we’d take a cab rather than the train, just so we had extra flexibility and it’s a little faster overall.

But…. As I was typing this, a friend who lives in Germany just texted me saying that the market is canceled, so I guess this is all moot.

I have a guy in Omaha and pay $667 for the year for pre-emergent with fertilizer, and broad leaf weed control for April/may. Preventive insecticide and broad leaf control in July, fertilizer and broad leaf control in October. Fall aeration and over seeding and Q4 weed control.

Said you could pay with a credit card with a fee but think you have to get ahold of him as the quick book invoice he sends just asks for routing and account number. Trugreen was a lot more expensive when I checked it out.

Currently trying to figure out the best way to gift travel to my mom for Christmas. She would never take me up on a gift where I book for her with cash/points once she decides on where and when. She doesn't fly and prefers cheap hotels vs. luxury properties. Thinking of a Hilton or Marriott gift card so she can book a staycation or a weekend roadtrip somewhere within driving distance. Open to suggestions.

5

u/De11kbn Nov 16 '21

So every time I fly these days I am given the chance at pretty great offer from AA due to overbooking but since I am traveling with family I never pull the trigger .. is there any good hacks on how to do this - would hate to board last and have to check our bags.

3

u/Smart_Dumb Nov 16 '21

I've seen the offer on the AA app on flights that I have been on that weren't even full.

9

u/josephson93 Nov 16 '21

Boarding last is almost guaranteed. That game is best played solo or maybe with one other adult.

But if you insist, be at the desk when the gate agent arrives and make sure to request that your seats won't be reassigned unless it's 100% that all of you are being VDB'd.

Remember also that any checked bags are unlikely to be returned. It's a common myth that bags can't fly without their owner. That's only for int'l flights.

2

u/OccamsVirus MSY, EWR Nov 17 '21

be at the desk when the gate agent arrives

This is key. I've seen this offer pop up on almost every flight I've taken in the last year but since I usually wait in the lounge until boarding I've never gotten a chance to utilize it.

2

u/De11kbn Nov 16 '21

Is it better to do it through the app or when you get to gate? Also when you do it through the app does it reflect your whole party or just you or that you have to do individually for each person? Much thanks!

3

u/josephson93 Nov 16 '21

The app is meaningless 99% of the time. Unless it's offering an immediate change with compensation, which is rare, at best the app will get you on the volunteer list and/or allow you to change your flight for free but with no comp.

Last I've seen, one person can't volunteer multiple people in the app.

i'm convinced that amex and dell are 2 slimy greedy pigs who are working together to deceive the public and they should both be sued for that.

dell has a long history of being known for their horrible customer service and willingness to fuck people in the ass to save a few dollars, and that's probably why amex chose dell for the biz plat credits vs for example lenovo or any of the other dozens of "business" technology providers out there.

both when trying to use my biz plat credits and when trying to use my other amex cards for the dell %10 offer, all orders get cancelled within a few minutes no matter which address I use including my real physical address with all shipping/billing info matching and nothing at all looks out of the ordinary.

meanwhile amex is sitting there enjoying the fact that they won't have to pay their share (whatever it is) for the credit which they clearly state in their T&C's, yet they still got payed their $595 AF. what a bunch of greedy motherfuckers.

u/BOS_George Nov 17 '21

I never asked to be set up as a business but I think someone must’ve done it so they could process higher volume orders. I’d just ask the operator for small business sales.

2

u/770allday Nov 16 '21

no. nothing to do with verification. when I call to inquire about the cancellations, they always give me the same canned responses about "system detects abnormalities, nothing we can do about it, fuck off bye". and I don't think i'm flagged as a reseller due to the fact that when I place orders with non amex cards they go thru. I think they along with amex just doesn't want to honor their credits/offers.

1

u/BOS_George Nov 16 '21

Meh, I did all $15k on my BBP and am working on a second Employee round. Amex likely pays nothing on the spend offer, it’s marketing for Dell. I’m sure they pay some percentage of the Platinum credit though.

5

u/twi5t3d SJC, SFO Nov 15 '21

I help my friends research and buy gaming PCs. I used my Amex Biz Plat $200 Dell credit on this one: https://deals.dell.com/en-us/member/productdetail/bcti

Insanely good deal today on this gaming laptop and a great use of the Dell credit imo.

2

u/12itsnotme12 Nov 16 '21

I'm waiting for Black Friday to snag a super good deal if it exists. I dabble in mining and dell recently had an Alienware with 3060ti for $1100ish before taxes with the credit

2

u/Citizen51 Nov 16 '21

If you're using your Dell credits for this, their Black Friday ad is already out. A lot of deals started yesterday, but some aren't until later, but not all the way to BF.

1

u/twi5t3d SJC, SFO Nov 16 '21

What are you mining? Does the value you mine exceed the electricity cost or are you speculating?

1

u/12itsnotme12 Nov 16 '21

Im lazy, use nice hash, so ETH but it pays in BTC. Still trying to figure out if I wanna go cold storage or put it into a brokerage. The Defi aspect interests me more than the money value itself, which is why it's not in anything with a social tied to it.

Currently net $10-$15/ day depending on the demand. Can easily lower temps and electricity with undervolting and overclocking. Took the 5700 down from 150watts to 120... could go lower but was unstable via riser for some reason.

Gonna fire up raptorium(spelling?) when I get back home as I'm interested in that.

1

u/twi5t3d SJC, SFO Nov 16 '21

Interesting, thanks for sharing. 90% of the people I know in mining are explicitly there for profits not for defi.

1

u/Citizen51 Nov 16 '21

I was eyeing an XPS and do a split payment so that I can use the plat credit and my BBP's $200 of of $800. I hadn't considered the gaming laptops. I have a desktop, but I rarely get on it and just play low end games on my old XPS that's not great.

2

u/twi5t3d SJC, SFO Nov 16 '21

You can try parsec if your home network is strong. It’s basically a better version of Remote Desktop specifically for gaming.

u/Tsarinax JFK, BDL Nov 15 '21

Considering the graphics card alone is worth at least half that these days, yeah that’s not a bad deal at all. I’m not sure how the 8gb ram and 256gb add will do though.

I’ve got $2700 left on an Ally auto loan. I’ve been using PayPal Key to pay it off but I’m not able to use it anymore. Anyone had luck with using VGC? I’ve tried but it just denies. Wondering if there’s a work around..?

1

u/jnjustice Nov 16 '21

How are (were) you paying the loan with PPK?

4

u/dennis_the_menace253 ATL, DEN Nov 16 '21

Using the debit card option.

Do you just call or is this online? Is there a fee?

I'm looking to refinance and if their interest rate is good then that could be a nice option.

I've seen some discussion on this in the past, but what are some good career paths for people who love churning?

I'm currently a software engineer, and I bet there are many others like me here. I can't help but wonder if there's something else out there that more closely aligns with my interests. Maybe I should look more into the fintech side of software?

I'm sure there are some accountants here, and I've seen recent discussion on the "Up in the Air" consulting profession (like in the movie). What else is out there?

1

u/jerseyguy195 Nov 18 '21

I work in a sterile pharmacy making new drugs for clinical trials. The attention to detail and paperwork are paramount asking with the prep work involved before it's go time.

3

u/JPWRana Nov 17 '21

My career path fits well with churning. I do lots of field inspections, so i do tons of driving. The amount of MS i can do is great.

2

u/ccuser011 Nov 16 '21

I initially came here from Rev Analytics field in travel sector (intentionally vague here ;-) ... this might be field you wanna venture into it. Perhaps join loyalty program team (i.e HH, AA and SW/RR based in DFW market).

Based on my own experience, I would suggest keeping it hobby. FT provided gateway to this community.

3

u/jfchops2 MSP Nov 16 '21

I started as a financial analyst and now work in operations for a Fortune 100 company. Just being comfortable with spreadsheets, money, data, problem solving, and the like translates well to getting "good" at churning.

2

u/planesurf MIA, HNL Nov 16 '21

Amazon FBA / ecom

Stock trader (both passive or day trading if you can handle risk)

Travel Youtube / Blog as a hobby to fill up time

3

u/Ok_Pause2667 Nov 16 '21

My P2 owns a Travel Agency as their full time job. Agent rates and earned free nights with companies they book often are complimented very well by the points we earn churning. It can take some time to get into the field and build up a client base, but even as a side gig, it has some attractive benefits in my opinion.

2

u/la_remontada Nov 16 '21

Also been thinking about this lately. I don’t want to necessarily churn for my job since I genuinely enjoy this hobby, but I want to do something that definitely optimizes within an existing system.

5

u/IChurnToBurn THS, SUX Nov 16 '21

I’ve put a little thought into getting a travel agent certification and creating a miles/points focused travel agency.

6

u/Tsarinax JFK, BDL Nov 15 '21

I’m a business analyst/project manager in finance. It helps to not be intimidated by a spreadsheet and actually enjoy working with details like that. I dabbled in law while in college too so I actually don’t mind reading terms and conditions, listening to earnings calls, things like that. Churning, or maximizing personal finance, for me is just an extension of what I’m already naturally interested in.

12

u/Churnobull SNA, KEE Nov 15 '21

Project Management / Program Management

This is what I’ve been doing for quite some time and there are several parallels around planning/executing/alternative solution finding.

Pay fluctuates wildly but I’m happy with where I’ve gotten to at this point in life.

I work closely with engineers and the business for high level planning. Could be a smooth transition as you have technical skills, if this is something you want to do. Happy to talk offline if you’re interested.

11

u/Very_Sadly_True PIE, BOI Nov 15 '21

Hmmm for me churning is hobby, but my job (product/sales management) involving significant travel has certainly helped me build up status, a nice (albeit slowly devaluing...) piggy bank of points/miles, and a lot of organic valuable category spend.

Making churning your job would be more like what the travel bloggers do, or something along the lines of monetization like Scotts Cheap Flights to sell a service to the community. If you're just talking about a job where you travel a lot, consulting or outside sales is probably your best bet. I dated someone who worked at McKinsey and it felt like she was flying off to Detroit 75% of the work week.

Also side note, I read the book "Up in the Air" and it's a psychedelic clusterfuck compared to the suave desolation of the movie.

1

u/JPWRana Nov 17 '21

Why is the book worse?

1

u/Very_Sadly_True PIE, BOI Nov 17 '21

Well obviously it's subjective, but I really just didn't enjoy the latter half of the book where the protagonist falls into a chaotic drug fueled mess of situations... especially compared to the themes of loneliness and determination of what is important in one's life explored in the movie. The book just felt lacking in anything substantive IMO.

0

u/planesurf MIA, HNL Nov 16 '21

Also side note, I read the book "Up in the Air" and it's a psychedelic clusterfuck compared to the suave desolation of the movie.

Good or bad way? Watched the movie in the air a few times and the last time it brought back some bad feelings for my last relationship -- made me double down on myself.

1

u/Very_Sadly_True PIE, BOI Nov 16 '21

IMO the book is pretty terrible, and spoilers I guess but the protagonist in the book descends into drug filled ramblings for the last third of the book IIRC.

I loved the movie precisely because it made me consider the importance of the relationships I've built/lost and how much being a "cool traveling businessman" did take away from my personal life even if I got to go to some cool places and made some more money.

1

u/whosaskin11 Nov 15 '21

I completely understand the sentiment of keeping it a hobby instead of making it your job. In general, I'm trying to find a common denominator in terms of how our brains work.

We enjoy keeping track of and optimizing things that others would absolutely hate doing. There's a certain degree of instant gratification and reward proportional to effort, and that appeals to me. Closing a sale might have a similar effect, but I rarely experience that in my professional life.

2

u/ne0ven0m OMG, BOO Nov 15 '21

While I've seen quite a few Broadway shows and orchestral performances, never been to the opera before. But want to check it off my list, and I see there's a good one at the Met in NY next month. I'm not sure how I'll enjoy it, in case anyone else wants to share their experiences.

2

u/OccamsVirus MSY, EWR Nov 17 '21

I saw a production of Faust at the MET back in like 2013 and it was incredible. Highly recommend the experience.

5

u/positivecontrol Nov 16 '21

Met opera is one of the few performing art events that people will still get really dressed up for (there is no dress code though). Part of the fun is people watching in the lobby/at the bar.

2

u/whereismyllama Nov 16 '21

definitely pick the right intro opera: Verdi, Mozart, something fun and not 6 hours long...

4

u/ne0ven0m OMG, BOO Nov 16 '21

Mozart's The Magic Flute, so I guess I picked an easy intro.

u/KingfisherDays

1

u/KingfisherDays Nov 16 '21

Should be fun, lucky you didn't pick Wagner!

2

u/whereismyllama Nov 16 '21

Oh yeah for sure. It's even in English I believe. It's super fun, and has some recognizable songs. Check out the queen of the night aria on youtube ahead of time then try not to sing along :)

1

u/KingfisherDays Nov 15 '21

Which opera?

1

u/lenin1991 HOT, DOG Nov 15 '21

I'd listen to a song or even better find a video excerpt from a good professional company to see if it's something that appeals to you.

I have a pretty wide cultural net, I've subscribed to several theater companies, appreciate classical music ... but I've given opera several chances, including at a world famous company in Russia, I just don't get the style.

6

u/Very_Sadly_True PIE, BOI Nov 15 '21

Some people recommend looking up the synopsis/summary/characters before going - it's definitely helpful to be less lost in the experience because the first opera I watched I had no fucking idea what was going on or who the characters were.

Others like going in blind, but I see the "spoiler" option as going in blind to the music/character interactions - I appreciate having a little framework for the story myself!

Just enjoy the experience honestly. Just like musicals/orchestral performances are better live, so is opera.

How do I prove that I've met the requirement for a timeshare presentation? Say the deal is to sit through 90 minutes of their thing. Can I just leave at 90 minutes?

I did a Hilton Grand Vacations a few months back. It was only slight pressure. After a couple times saying no, and a very brief chat with the "inventory specialist" I was "signed out" and free to go. What if they won't "sign me out" though? Is that even a thing?

I was thinking about making a video with my phone of the presentation starting at say 9:15, and then another video at 10:45 of me thanking them and just leaving. Is there anything more to it than this?

The issue of only doing a timeshare presentation if I know I can firmly stick with not buying isn't an issue. There's nothing these folks can say to sway me. I'm fully aware of how this works and I 100% I won't buy.

2

u/Arcades FRE, AKS Nov 16 '21

I've done two -- one through Hilton and one through RCI (Hilton affiliate). The Hilton one finished up just under an hour because it was clear they weren't getting anywhere with me. The RCI one ran long about an hour and 45 mins (because they have a longer group presentation component). If you want to take the chance of arguing over the 90 minute mark or not you can, but I'd just stay until they discharge you.

Time is money for the presenters and they don't to keep a lost cause on their clock longer than they have to.

1

u/toru85 Nov 15 '21

Any idea how I could be targeted for these time share promotions?

3

u/FriendlyITGuy BDL, LAS Nov 16 '21

You can sign up for them directly. Hilton's normal Orlando/Myrtle Beach/Las Vegas one is $199. https://www.hiltongrandvacations.com/en/offers/lp/web/1020/lv-orl-mb

Sometimes you can be targeted and get it for free.

6

u/flyiingpenguiin Nov 15 '21

Tell them at the beginning that you have plans to be somewhere after 90 minutes

7

u/thekingoftherodeo BOS, MAN Nov 15 '21

Be upfront with the sales agent and set a timer on your phone.

1

u/AmishGypsy Nov 15 '21

For sure. I understand how to behave and conduct myself during the ordeal, I've read about and watched loads of YouTube on the subject. One thing I've never come across is how to prove you've satisfied the requirement.

I feel nervous about the timer going off, I just outright leave, and them coming back saying I didn't meet the requirement. I wouldn't put it past an outfit as shady as these to pull something like that.

How can I leave when I say "I'm leaving now" while still having proof I've met the requirement when they could very well say something like "you need to talk to my manager before I can let you go" and the pitch starts all over again?

I've read/seen so much about people who were supposed to be there for 90 minutes and ended up spending 8+ hours there. That's not for me. When 90 minutes hits I want to be on my way out at 90 minutes.

13

u/POINTSmetotheMILES Nov 15 '21

Why are you worried about this?

4

u/CericRushmore Nov 15 '21

After 90 minutes you can tell them time is up. In my experience they check you out when done.

0

u/Newchurnerlyfe Nov 16 '21

You okay? Need someone to talk to?

0

u/Eurynom0s LAX Nov 15 '21

Trying to make sure I'm not having a major reading comprehension fail here, this offer language isn't saying that an individual purchase has to be at least $35, right, just that you have to hit a minimum of $35 across however many purchases to get your statement credit? I know it seems kind of obvious but I have a $26 Speedway transaction from last week and a $30.05 Chevron transaction from this week and am only seeing the $5 for $30 Chevron offer has having been used.

Get a $3 statement credit by using your enrolled Card to spend a minimum of $35 in one or more transactions at a U.S. gas station by 12/31/2021. Limit of 5 statement credits (total of $15). See terms for exclusions.

1

u/One_Armed_Herman Nov 16 '21

Maybe I'm missing what you're seeing, but isn't the single $5 credit correct? You spent $26 at speedway, not enough to get the $5. With the Chevron purchase you went over the $35 threshold (specifically up to $56.05) which earned you $5. I'd guess that with about $14 more in gas purchases you'd break the $70 threshold and earn the 2nd $5 bonus.

2

u/Eurynom0s LAX Nov 16 '21

Rereading I see I left a bit out. There were two separate offers. One was a single-use $5 off $30 at Chevron. The other was the one I posted the terms for, $3 off $35, up to 5 times, at any gas pump. So I expected it to stack, with the Chevron purchase triggering both the $5 off $30 at Chevron, and to cross over the $35 mark for the $3 off $35 at any gas pump offer.

1

u/One_Armed_Herman Nov 16 '21

Hmm. Then I don't know. I would have thought you were right but don't have specific experience stacking the offers like that.

3

u/manageroftheyear BAS, BAL Nov 15 '21

This is somewhat standard (albeit confusing) language for Amex. But yes, the $35 should be able to be spread across multiple transactions. My interpretation is that each $35 nets you $3 back.

1

u/Eurynom0s LAX Nov 16 '21

Thanks for confirming my read on that. I guess I'll give it until the end of the week before I ask about it in chat.
